Lilies at Mt. Auburn

We are extremely fortunate to be across the street from the magnificent Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Founded in 1831 as America’s first landscaped or garden cemetery it comprises 175 acres. Home to an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna as well as an exceptional collection of statuary, this jewel affords us countless opportunities for the study of urban wildlife as well as local history.

Pond at Mt. Auburn

A National Historic Landmark, Mount Auburn Cemetery is much more than an active place of burial. On 175 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, Mount Auburn is an outdoor museum of 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century art and architecture; a botanical garden with more than 5,000 trees, representing 630 different taxa; and an urban oasis where wildlife can find much-needed refuge and shelter.

Winter at Mt. Auburn

Founded in 1831, Mount Auburn was created as a place for the living to enjoy the beauty of nature and to learn the lessons of history by visiting the graves of the notable New Englanders who made the Cemetery their final resting place. Today, Mount Auburn continues to welcome more than 200,000 visitors annually.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is proud to have the Atrium School as its newest neighbor. With a renewed commitment to education, Mount Auburn welcomes the Atrium School’s teachers and students to take full advantage of the Cemetery’s many educational resources. The Cemetery is an outdoor classroom where it is possible to learn about virtually any subject matter: horticulture, history, notable people, ecology, art and architecture, just to name a few. It is Mount Auburn’s hope that while visiting the Cemetery to strengthen the lessons being taught in the classroom, Atrium School students are also learning a valuable lesson about the importance of preserving and protecting our cultural heritage and our natural resources.

Mount Auburn looks forward to strengthening its relationship with the entire Atrium School Community in the coming academic year and in the many years that follow.
